Finally, a class designed for small businesses on the complicated topic
of human resources management. This workshop covers regulatory compliance
issues and establishing policies and procedures. It also touches on the
soft skills needed to effectively manage people.
This workshop is presented in five modules that run two to three
hours each. Here's what you'll learn:
- Ethics and Liability Management
You will learn the guiding principles of business ethics and how they
apply to your business. This includes the importance of developing a
Personnel Policy Manual and Employee Handbook. You will understand how
training managers and supervisors is critical to liability management.
Other topics include establishing a positive work environment, managing
workplace discrimination, substance abuse, harassment and violence.
The topic of employee termination through the use of progressive discipline
is covered. You will learn the distinctions between employee groups
and the importance of Employment Practices Liability Insurance.
- Recruitment and Selection
Key features for job descriptions are analyzed in order to establish
effective methods of candidate sourcing. Managing employer risk during
the selection process from initial review to final selection, when employment
testing is appropriate, issues around drug and alcohol testing are all
covered in this module. You will also learn the mandatory periods you
must keep employment records.
- Compensation and Employee Retention
You will learn the importance of developing a job analysis and classification
program in order to design a compensation plan. By defining job descriptions,
you can then define positions so they can be compared both internally
and externally for fair and equitable job pricing. Recent wage and salary
survey data are provided. Strategies for other types of compensation
such as profit sharing, commissions, and executive compensation are
covered. You will learn how to use employment management to enhance
employee performance and reduce employer risk, improve retention and
develop innovative compensation strategies.
- Managing Employee Benefits and Payroll
Health care is one of the biggest challenges to small businesses. In
this module you will learn about viable health care options that include
typical options for dental, vision, prescription drug plans, short and
long-term disability plans, employee assistance programs and life insurance.
Qualified retirement programs, particularly SEPs and SIMPLEs will be
covered. Tips on controlling health care costs and managing employer
liability are provided. There will be discussions on payroll issues
include the basics of managing payroll and tips on outsourcing this
task. You will also learn federal and state tax requirement, required
forms needed, and your responsibility in maintaining records.
- Government Compliance - For All Employers
This session will cover government compliance requirements for all employers.
You will be presented lessons learned from recent employment related
court cases. Topics covered include requirements related to minimum
wages, overtime pay, employment of children, hours worked, equal pay,
HIPAA privacy rules, Form I-9, required federal and state posters and
employment security for military service. You will receive tips on controlling
rampant workers' compensation costs.
Discussions are facilitated by business counselors who will help you
examine your individual situation, explore opportunities and discover
new ideas. You'll learn from other participants and have a host of valuable
resources available to you.
